Does anyone remember children’s books about a robot spaceship from the late 80s?

There were two of them. One was a tour of the solar system. The other was a tour of the universe. The robot was a small toy that unfolded into a full-size spaceship in the shape of a robot. Please let me know if you know the title and/or author. I’d love to get copies of them again!

Children’s books about being different/Acceptance?

I’m looking for recommendations for kids books. I would like books that represent gay/lesbian families, other “different” families, different cultures, races, etc. I want them to be represented positively.

I have And Tango Makes Three and My Princess Boy.

I’m really just trying to expand my child’s “library” If you have any other suggestions like what you childs fave book is. List it.
I wish I was cool enough to be an author. I didn’t pay enough attention during school. My grammar mistakes are evidence of that icon wink childrens books
Wow. So yeah I have books about counting and ABC’s. Typical children’s literature like Goodnight Moon. I was looking for something different to add. Something I may not have heard of.

You may not agree with it but I do not care. I see nothing wrong with a book normalizing different families in the eyes of my child. I hear about stories about kids going to school and making fun of other kids because they draw a family picture and it doesn’t match their own. My child will be raised by her white mom and dad. She’ll spend much of her life around the same set up. I want something else there besides me just telling her. From what I’ve seen with children already these types of talks don’t come up until the child is pointing it’s finger at a little person or whoever.

You can raise your child the way that you want. This is how I choose to raise mine. Nothing you can say will make me see how it could possibly be wrong.

What’s a query letter and how do I write one? What’s the format of a query letter?

Will writing a query letter give me a better shot at getting my book published by a popular vanity publisher? How can my book become a bestseller? Do I need to get a copyright for my manuscript before or after I send the publisher samples of my book chapters if they liked my query letter?

Support bestsellers

admin answers:

A query letter is a letter you send to a publishing company you are interested in sending your manuscript to. All publishing houses are different, and the majority of them do not accept unsolicited works. This would mean you would have to work with an agent to help you get published. Your book will be copyrighted after it is published. If you are looking to make your book a best seller, you will have to get yourself recognized as a writer. First, start submitting short stories, prose, poetry, etc., to accepting publications like magazines, literary journals, chap books. Once you have made a name for yourself, agents and publishers will start to take you more seriously.

On the other hand, you could self-publish. You would have to do all of your own marketing and pay quite a bit out of pocket.

I am not sure what kind of book you have written, but I do know of some fantasy/science fiction publishers that are currently accepting unsolicited manuscripts. If you’re interested in trading correspondence, feel free to drop me an email:

Children’s book with illustrations similar to those found in Roald Dahl’s books?

I don’t remember much about the book except there was detail about the beds each of the family members slept in. Each bed had something fabulous about it, including one bedroom where the two beds were raised through the ceiling so the children could enjoy the stars.

The illustration was similar to those found in Roald Dahl’s books.

admin answers:

This is the most difficult area of publishing to break into. I just finished ghostwriting two children’s books for a very major publisher (one of the giants) and a celebrity who shall go unnamed.

This is how the children’s book market breaks down right now.

1) About 40% of the market is controlled by celebrities like Madonna, Jamie Lee Curtis etc. Celebrity kids books sell.

2) Another 40% is controlled by tried and true kids authors like Eric Carle etc. They sell too.

3) Another 15 – 20% is controlled by reprints of classic kids books like Curious George etc. They sell also.

That leaves at best 5% for new authors. And lately adult authors like Carl Hiaasen and one of those Higgins Clark women have entered the kids market – reducing your 5% and practically slamming the door on new authors.

In addition, major publishers like the one I write for have huge backlogs of books they have contracted with but haven’t gotten out yet. Kids books take a LONG time to come out.

Therefore, many major publishers including the one I write for have stopped even reading kids books. As a result, agents don’t want to read it either. Not if they can’t sell it.

Unless it is a very exceptional book, it doesn’t have much of a chance in the current market. Spend an hour in Barnes and Noble’s kids dept. and note what books are there. It will confirm this information. You will see almost exactly the breakdown I have described here. I got that info from an exec at the publisher I write for.

The best you can hope for is to go to the library and get a copy of LIterary Marketplace from the research section and start studying it. Search for smaller publishers who are still looking for kids books. Make notes – you cannot check the book out. Then go online and google the heck out of the names and make sure you don’t find any bad info about them. Visit Preditors and Editors and Absolute Write Water Cooler Bewares and Background Checks for info on the baddies out there. There are many.

Make sure you do not send any material to anybody until you are sure they are legit. Otherwise it is lost to you. Then follow submission guidelines and go for it. It is a terribly hard market to break into. A couple books with a small company may help open the doors a little bit for you later on.

Authors have to do research. You have to go to a bookstore and learn your market. Find out what sells and what doesn’t. One more hint … forget about holiday type books all together. They have too short a selling time and publishers are flooded with them. They get declined first.

Hope that helps. Even though it is not great news. Pax – C

I want to be a writer, but i don’t know any good book publishers. It would really help if you told me a site for the publishers or how to find some. Thanks!

Support childrens books

admin answers:

There are several ways to get a book published:
a) Self publish and then hussle the stores for book-signings and the like.
b) W/ an agent – though this is changing – who will charge you a % plus $100 – 300 to preview your work. There is no guarantee they will find a publisher.
c) Try and find a publisher yourself. Remember, what is immortal prose to you is either profit or loss to them. They are a business.
d) Writer’s Market is THE book listing publishers and their fields. The library most likely has one. It comes out each year and some used books stores carry some that are 1 or 4 years old. They also have an on-line site.
A. Hoy’s Writer’s Weekly can also provide advice.

write your book in your own language- if your English is not very good, you probably wont get a publisher, unless you get someone to edit your entire manuscript first.

You need to get a best seller in your own market and then, once publishers can see that they can make money from you, they will buy the rites to translate it.

Anyway, go for it, many have done it before, so why not you!!

because it showcases through the narration of a 5 year old on how she matured and came to the realization of the injustice and inequalities , the good and evil in her surrounding environment at the time (1960′s??) the prejudice and such.
She learned how even though one gives off a bad outlook they can be misjudged and are truly good (boo radley)

I think its good because it really is the thoughts of a little girl, one who blurts things not knowing it is wrong (the part where she tells her new teacher that one of the kids is too poor) and by the end of the book she really has matured from her experiences.

The Bible has been translated into over 1800 languages and is consistently the number- one bestseller every?

year for a good reason: Why?

Support bestsellers

admin answers:

If the Bible is the real-deal, the Word of God, then we have a book that answers the issues of life. Therefore, it is very important to determine IF the Bible is reliable. The Bible is a collection of 66 books (39 Old Testament, 27 New Testament) written over a period of 1500 years by approximately 40 different authors about creation, history, prophecy and Gods plan for all of creation. This fact is a miracle ALL by itself!

How can 40 different authors over a period of 1500 years write a collection of work that doesn’t contradict itself?? It can not do this without Divine intervention! Facts and principles such as the earth being round Isaiah 40:22 , earth being suspended in nothing Job 26:7 , valleys in the seas 2 Samuel 22:16 , sanitation Deuteronomy 23:12,13 , quarantine Leviticus 13:45-46 , and blood being the source of life Leviticus 17:11 (DNA) ALL these scientific findings were recorded in the Bible hundreds (sometimes thousands) of years before they were “discovered” by scientists. These are just a few examples, there are many, many more.

Who else but God could have revealed such things that were unknown to man – and yet would later be discovered and confirmed? GOD knew because he created them all! Hundreds of prophecies have been documented! Prophecy is a promise from God of what is to come. Unlike other books and false religions whose predictions have come and gone (and failed) the Bible has never missed. Consider Psalm 22:12-18 which describes the crucifixion of Christ. Now consider that this book was written 1,000 years before Christ was even born, and at least 600 years before crucifixion existed! This is just ONE example regarding Jesus, there are hundreds more.

Google “fulfilled prophecy” There are many ministries, scientists and historians whose work exclusively deals with prophecy. It seems pretty clear at this point that a book written by so many different people over such a period of time containing all of these undiscovered scientific principles and specific predictions about people, places, and events with 100% accuracy could only be the product of something supernatural – God. He tells us in 2 Timothy 3:16 that he is the author. The Dead Sea Scrolls, discovered in 1947, are an overwhelming source of confirmation. These scrolls contain manuscripts about 1,000 years older than what we previously had… and they all match! It takes a lot more blind faith to ignore the Bible than it does to accept it as divine and reliable. Many intelligent and scholarly skeptics have set out to disprove the Bible and God’s existence only to find overwhelming evidence that God does exist and the Bible is His Word. Jesus says if you seek him honestly He will personally make himself known.

to write a bestseller, be a sensationalist, and hype up some rubbish to make it look like everyone’s lives are in need of it. that, or write about vampires

Are there any writers of children’s books able to point me in the right direction please?

I am currently writing children’s books and also illustrating them. I have them hand written and drawn on paper with a front cover. What is the next step? How can I get these books looked at and published? What did you do? Thank you

Support childrens books

admin answers:

It depends on how you want to publish. If you want to pay to have them edited/published- I can’t really help you.

I self-published through Lulu.com Lulu gives you the opportunity to also sell your books through Amazon.com However, you’d have to have the stories already pre-formatted, typed, and on the computer in a PDF file format.

For you, however, I think you’d need to dig a little deeper by looking into publishing companies. Can you not access a computer? I’m thinking most publishers/companies would prefer to have them typed. If they’re not typed, it might cost you extra money to have it published (extra work for them)

I’d get your work typed first, honestly. And I don’t know about hand drawn work, since I illustrated on Photoshop.

I really wish to publish my books, and i think young kids will certainly enjoy them. Is there anyway I can publish this book without going through an agent (NOT SELF PUBLISHING). Also, I am only in my early teens will that affect my ability to publish my books(s)?

Support childrens books

admin answers:

As far as who to send it to, we can’t answer that question because we have NO knowledge of what your manuscript is about. Different publishers specialize in different things, and even within the realm of “children’s books” there are different types of stories.

The only thing that your age will affect is your ability to sign a contract. Your parent or guardian will need to sign it with you because you are not of age yet.

So do your own homework. Take a look at the most recent “Writer’s Market”… or even better, try the “Guide to Literary Agents”.

I absolutely suggest getting an agent instead of approaching publishers directly. Since you are not a contract attorney, so you will need someone to look over any offers and to guide you through the publishing world. It seems that you have a lot to learn about the way publishing works, so they can be your guide through the tricky parts. Many amateur writers inadvertently give away a LOT of their rights for no money. Why skip an agent when they can save you from these headaches?

Also, you will not be seding your manuscript to agents or publishers unsolicited! Send them a query letter and see if they ask to see a partial, then a full. If you send the whole thing, it will just get you a form rejection letter. Research each agent’s specific submission guidelines and follow their rules!

Here are four websites that can help. Read them thoroughly (especially Miss Snark– love her!) and research, research, research! These can help you determine if the agent is legit or not:

http://misssnark.blogspot.com/

http://www.agentquery.com/

http://www.anotherealm.com/prededitors/

http://www.publishersmarketplace.com

Again, read Miss Snark. She has attitude, but is a real-life agent and her archives can answer any questions you possibly have. Read, read, read. When you pick up “Writer’s Market” or “Guide to Literary Agents”, don’t just look at the listings, read them!

And don’t submit to anyone on this list:

http://www.sfwa.org/beware/twentyworst.html

You will face a lot of rejection, but if you really want this then keep at it! Work hard, and good luck!

Looking for a children’s book where tiny books are found in a quilt.?

I was read this book in grade 3. The book is possibly set in Canada – I vaugley remember the Okanagan valley. Two children are sent to stay with (possibly) a relative. There’s some old family mystery they solve by finding rock letters hidden in the flower gardens, and this leads to finding small books that had been sewn into a quilt.

It’s called “Mystery at Cranberry Farm” by Lynn Manuel.

Your memory is very good, all the details you list are accurate except that there are three kids (Trish, Teddy, and Tory), not two. It is set in the Okanagan Valley and they are staying with a Great Aunt for the summer.

No. I’ve read both, and they are not connected. Some of the characters are similar, and you can see this, but the Maximum Ride books are for younger readers. The nature of the experiments, and the horrific nature (and number of failures) of that kind of genetic engineering is toned down. Max’s anatomy is also changed somewhat to make for an easier character to write about. The tone is different also, with When the Wind Blows being far more serious. Two completely separate stories, but a common idea.
Just read Maximum Ride, I enjoyed them more.

There are SOOO many good books from the late 20th century, but the best ones are pretty different from your classic Dickens/Austen formats. If you get away from bestsellers and head more into “literature”, then prepare to be a bit more challenged and a lot more unsettled. :]

A lot of greats have been named already, but I’d like to add a few from the early-mid 20th century, which will lead you nicely into the more recent stuff (just note that there’s a lot more sex and swearing in 20th Century literature):

Lolita – Vladimir Nabokov
Tropic of Cancer – Henry Miller
To Kill a Mockingbird – Harper Lee
Heart of Darkness – Joseph Conrad
Catch 22 – Joseph Heller
Catcher in the Rye – JD Salinger
Gone With The Wind – Margaret Mitchell
The Great Gatsby – F Scott Fitzgerald
Crime and Punishment – Fyodor Dostoyevsky
Animal Farm – George Orwell
In Cold Blood – Truman Capote
Ulysses – James Joyce [I don't know anyone who finished this the first time they tried]
The Old Man and the Sea – Ernest Hemingway
Lady Chatterley’s Lover – DH Lawrence
The Quiet American – Graham Greene
The Naked and the Dead – Norman Mailer
Slouching Towards Bethlehem – Joan Didion
The Sound and the Fury – William Faulkner
The Maltese Falcon – Dashiell Hammett

More recently, I’d vote for these ones:

Captain Corelli’s Mandolin – Louis De Bernieres
One Hundred Years of Solitude – Gabriel Garcia Marquez
Atonement – Ian McEwan
The Lovely Bones – Alice Sebold
Midnight’s Children – Salman Rushdie
The Color Purple – Alice Walker
Cider House Rules – John Irving
A Clockwork Orange – Anthony Burgess
Roots – Alex Haley
Suite Francaise – Irene Nemirovsky
Ragtime – E. L. Doctorow
Gravity’s Rainbow – Thomas Pynchon
Schindler’s Ark – Thomas Keneally

Where would I find a good publisher for children’s books?

I have one book already published through PublishAmerica and I’m not really fond of them. I’m wanting a Publisher that will really help with promoting the book and not just publish it and drop the ball to me.

Support childrens books

admin answers:

The fact of the matter is, even the big commercial publishers don’t do all that much to promote the books they publish. They have their marketing & promotions budgets worked out well in advance, and they have set ways of promoting books. In fact, the big publishers generally know in advance which books are going to sell well (ie which books they’re going to put a lot of money behind) and which ones are going to just drift away to the remainder pile.

These days, even if you publish with a major publisher, writers are expected to help with the marketing and promotion of their books. In fact, the effort a writer puts in can help make their book sell better than the publisher planned for it to.

Things are rough everywhere these days. Publishers have only a limited amount of money with which to promote the books they publish, and they tend to go through the same promotional channels over and over. A writer who has some creative marketing ideas can really make a difference in the promotion and sales of their book — no matter how large or small of a publisher they’re working with.

There are several good books on do-it-yourself book marketing. Do some searches on Google and Amazon and check a few of them out. You might be surprised at how much fun — and how do-able — some of these techniques sound. And, with a few of these ideas in your arsenal, any publisher you approach is going to know you’re savvy about how to sell your book — and that’s going to make you look like somebody they want to partner with, somebody they want to publish.

Good luck!

Designs and text are printed the same way anything from a computer is printed. Although book publishers have printers that are more extensive than a desktop printer. If you want to know more about the technology of printers, I would recommend looking at a more tech-oriented category.

Does anyone know of any children’s books where the main character is named Sydney?

My daughter’s name is Sydney and I was wondering if anyone knew of any children’s books where the main character is named Sydney with the exact same spelling? Also, the main character needs to be a girl. I have the book “Sydney’s Star” but i want to get more where the main character has the same name as my daughter.

I am NOT up to getting a book personalized where you send away for it and they create it after their names.

Where can I donate children’s books in the Bronx or Westchester County?

I have a TON of childrens books that my child has outgrown. I don’t want to throw them away because that would be a waste, and children that come from poor socio-economic backgrounds could certainly make good use of them.

The best answer is worth BEYOND the 10 points! It’s also doing good, benefiting needy children the most.

That is a cool thing that you are doing for the community.

I heard on 1010WINS that you can donate books to the Thorpe Family Residence. I checked them out and they also accept donations of second-hand clothing, household articles, toys and videos.

You can call them at 718-295-2550 to see which location you have to drop it off at.

If Ann Coulter is such a nutcase….why are her books bestsellers???

I found a very interesting excerpt on the web about Al Franken’s debate with Ann Coulter. His reflections and speech are remarkable. I just don’t get why people are willing to even listen to Ann Coulter. She makes America look extremely bad. I posted Al Franken’s reflections at the link below. What is the best music streaming service for Progressive House music?

I’m looking for a music streaming service that has all the latest vinyl records online. Preferably, also keeping track of Juno’s charts. Does this exist? Spotify has a lot of new releases… but there’s also a lot missing. For instance I can’t find this record: “Fatboy Slim vs Thomas Gold – Star 69″.

Has anyone read the book Oprah promotes “The New Earth; Awakening your life’s purpose”? Is it worth reading?

Every book Oprah promotes turns to bestsellers, and they all seems the same to me, books full of how to change your life. Are any of these books worth reading?

Support bestsellers

admin answers:

If you tend to like those types of books, then yes, I’d say they’re worth reading. Those types of books appeal to many people, and a lot of people read the books Oprah recommends and love them. Whether or not they’re worth reading is based on your personal preferences regarding book genres.

I hope this helps!

Carol childrens books

Carol asks…

What type of books do young children like to read?

I have to make my own children’s book for school. I’m thinking about a children’s book for 3-6 year olds.
Any ideas on morals to use?
Story lines?

Also do children like big sized books or small?

Thankyou so much :]

Support childrens books

admin answers:

Here are some idea’s.

i believe in unicorns – michael morpurgo
Wind In The Willows – Dont know who wrote that
Guess How Much I Love You – Sam Mcbratney
Varouis Disney Books Eg, Lion King, 101 Dalmation’s and Lady and the tramp
Ketchup On Your Cornflakes – Nick Sharratt

Depends what the book is about. If the book is a active book like pulling stuff out and opening flaps then a big book is better. If the book is a story then a small book is good.

GOOD STORY LINE

A children’s book usaly has a moral. You learn something at the end of the book.
This book is a GREAT example of that – Bringing down the moon – Jonathan Emmett

Hope this helped.

Remember those children’s books from the eighties that allowed you to choose what the character did?

What where they called and is their anything similar to that today? I loved those books and would like to buy some for my nieces.

The one I most clearly remember is the one about the boy that finds a dinosaur bone on a field trip and you get to decide how he handles it.

Example: Will you tell your teacher (Turn to page 89) / continue looking for more bones (Turn to page 25)

why are there are so many books about vampires?

twilight, house of night, the morganville vampires, vampire academy, vampire kisses are all vampire series that are bestsellers. is there a reason why people can’t get enough of vampires?

Support bestsellers

admin answers:

Dunno. I know that lots of teenage girls now kinda want to write about a vampire story…probably because they thought Twilight or whatever other book was cool, so they thought it’d be cool to write about a vampire.
I don’t know why there are so many vampire books, other than the possible reason I gave you, but the books that the teenage girls write probably aren’t actual books…so I still don’t know why there are so many vampire books.

How do you think up plots, i am going wrong somewhere?

i am desperate to write stories and one day novels on fantasy or sci fi genres, which could posibly be published as a dream. the thing is i always think up settings, interesting objects or inventions, and characters before i have a plot. however hard i try i cannot think of a plot, so any tips?

any ways of putting together ideas to make a unique but interesting plot? i want osmething so unique to make a bestseller, and im not asking for that plot but i want ways of thinking up plots

please help !!!!

admin answers:

Yes, conflict is an excellent place to start. Conflict drives action and resolution and any good plot out there you will find. I would suggest taking a close look at the stories, novels, movies, etc that you love and study their plots and find out why they are so compelling. What is the conflict? What motivates the characters? How does the story move? How is the plot resolved?

Think about what kind of actions will keep your story moving. The descriptions, your ideas, characters, etc, will just help the plot be lush. There needs to be action, events that keep the plot moving.

Every plot at its heart has already been done before. Not saying you need to reskin your favorite novel, but break them down to their simplest elements and become inspired from there. It’s okay to borrow, art is mostly plagiarism, anyway. Find your own twist, and please make it interesting!

How much would these writers make?

I know you can become incredibly rich off writing (J.K. Rowling, Stephen King etc.) and I know the average writer doesn’t make enough money to quit their job, but I do want to know how much they make, about.
So how much would you make off say
1. A top 10 novel
2. A number 1 bestseller
3. A top 20 novel
4. A top 50 novel

I appreciate your answers.

admin answers:

Unfortunately you don’t get paid based on the spot your novel occupies on the New York Times best seller’s list.

Particularly if you are a new, unproven, writer.

For you first work you will not get very much. If you have a good agent you will hold on to the film rights and few other goodies, but most likely you will get a reasonable fee for the privilege of that publisher taking a chance on you.

(I knew one author who got $20,000 and was happy. The book did ok and he sold some others at moderately higher fees.)

The hits come at the whim of the public.
