Almost all of the books that you will find available to read for free on the internet are books that are in the public domain. Their copyright has expired. For current books, you would have to pay to read them same as if you were reading an actual book.

Mary asks…

Can you help me recall a book on selfishness?

I remember reading a book years ago about selfishness. It was a bestseller but I don’t remember who wrote it or title. It came out a long time ago and I would like to read it again but can’t remember the title. Any clues?
Noble- That’s it!! Thanks so much!

Surrep- I have read The virtue of selfishness as well. That too is a great book as well as great author. Thank you for answering my question.

admin answers:

It could be any number of books but I hope this helps. I read and still have a book called, The Art of Selfishness. It was a bestseller and written by David Seabury originally in 1937. It has since been rereleased several times. It was a bestseller in 1964. If this is not the book your thinking of and you have not read this book I highly recommend it. That’s why I have this book in my collection and did not pass it on or sell it.

Mark bestsellers

Mark asks…

What elements make a YA novel a bestseller?

In your opinion, what elements make a YA novel a bestseller (popular)?
So far I’ve concluded it’s not the quality of the writing itself, so I’m thinking of things like a trend you noticed in romance, or the personalities of the main characters, or maybe how the plot goes.

I’m just curious about anything you think is important to the success of a YA novel, or a trend you saw.

Thanks icon smile bestsellers

admin answers:

Ha! If I knew that, I’d have written one already…

Judging from the questions I see in B&A, many successful YA series have many possible romantic pairings of characters. (“Who should X end up with?” “Who do you think is a better match for X – Y or Z?”) The author keeps the readers guessing as long as possible. If there’s only one possible pairing, the author waits as long as possible before resolving the romantic and sexual tension between those characters (they become a couple or they decide not to be).

Another trait is that you have a small group of characters who stick together and whose strengths complement one another, although they argue a lot. For instance, Harry, Ron and Hermione in Harry Potter (which also feeds the romantic tension – hands up all those who wanted Harry and Hermione to end up together). Another notable example is Kirk, Spock and Bones in the original Star Trek.

But if you want to write a YA novel, don’t put stuff into it just because you think that’ll make it popular. Commercial publishers don’t want what’s popular now – they want what they think will be popular in two years, because that’s how long it takes them between signing the contract and the book being in the shops. That’s not counting how long it’ll take you to write the book and get an agent. If you self-publish, you can respond to trends faster, but I think many successful novels were successful partly because they *weren’t* following a trend – instead they started one.

I once called him sort of late at night, because a family situation was upsetting me. He called back a second later. He had listened to half of the message and then called to see if I was okay. He listened, didn’t give much advice because he knew that wasn’t what I was looking for.

He helped my grandma around the other day during her visit, helping her walk when he had just met her.

He helped some organization hosting a technology event clean up after, even though he didn’t have to.

He tries to do whatever he can for other people, and for me. He’s just so kind that I can’t get over it, and of course that selflessness carries on into a relationship.

Self Publishing vs. Traditional Publishing?

I was wondering just how effective self publishing is compared to the traditional methods. Self publishing sites are popping up all over the internet but how often do those authors actually make money? I’ve never seen a self published book on the Bestseller List.

So whats the deal on these? Can you make good money with self publishing or is it so big simply because its FAR easier to do?

Support bestseller list

admin answers:

Self publishing is a printing service, and it has its place (copies for friends and family only or publications with limited appeal such as the history or event effecting a town). This is fine, and those companies that are honest about being a printing service still have the respect they deserve (and there are several of these).

The problem is that too many of them are targeting amateur authors with adcopy of half-truths and claims of being a traditional publisher. They bank on the insecurities of those who have a dream but are not informed enough about the industry to know how publishing really works.
1 – claims that you have to publish to get copyright protection (false, your work already has copyright when it’s written, whether it’s published or not) Many amateur authors worry about someone stealing their ideas, don’t know the facts about copyrights, so they get sucked into this half truth really easy
2- claims that its cheaper to self publish (false, tradtional publishing pays you, you do not pay them). Self publishing can cost hundreds or thousands of dollars, which most of us can not afford to pay for books that we can’t sell (most self published authors sell less than 50 books total, while most traditionally published authors sell over 1000)
3 – claims that you have to pay back advances tradtional publishers give you if your work doesn’t sell well (false, the advance is yours to keep unless you fail to turn in an acceptable manuscript (as in you refuse to make editorial changes asked for) or you sell the same book to another publisher (in which case you have defrauded them and owe the money back if you don’t want to get sued)
4 – claims that you can have developmental control over the work (dumb, most people do not have the marketing knowledge or experience to develop a product that will appeal to a market – if we all had those skills, advertsing companies wouldn’t exist) This includes editorial changes to make work more salable, which the amaeur author often refuses to do because they believe their stuff is perfect and changing it means they aren’t as great a writer as they think they are (even eperienced, published authors have editorial changes they make)
5 – lack of editorial control (dumb, this allows people to turn out poorly writen work which discourages readers from buying anything else from them – wouldn’t you want to put out the best product possible?) Bad spelling and grammar is just, well, bad. Poor story telling needs fixed. Incomprehensible and delusional rants are just not smart to start with. Nobody wants to buy a book with these problems.
6 – lack of distribution (dumb, most of us do not have the skills or contacts to get self published work into the major chain stores, and neither do most of the self publishers – being listed as “available to order” on a website or in a magazine ad is not the same as having books on shelves at real stores where most people still buy their books)
7 – “new author conspiracy” (stupid, traditional publishers are not conspiraing to prevent new authors from getting published – what would they sell when their old authors die?) Most amateur authors have trouble getting published because their writing skills are not yet good enough to meet the stardards expected by readers.
8 – claims that agents are unnecessary and ‘rob you’ of your profits (false, most of us do not have the skills to determine which manuscripts are marketable and to which editors, how to negotiate a contract, how to track royalties, and where to even look for subsidiary opportunities – agents do a lot for their 15%, considering that you would pay much more if you had to hire lawyers and accountants to do these things for you).
9 – claims of better royalties – (dumb, they may have a better rate, but it’s worthless when you have low sales – 40% on 50 books will never earn as much as 15% on 2500 books) This plays into the conspiracy theory that authors ‘get robbed’ by traditional publishers (when you are really in a joint venture with a traditional publisher and they earn their share by marketing, producing, and selling your work)
10 – claims that you can set your own price (true, but dumb – self published books cost 20% more(or higher if you want to make any profit at all) over that of traditionally published work (which can be produced in sufficient numbers to make the individual unit cost lower, and profits from high selling work helps cover losses from poor selling work)
11- claims that they can produce the work fast (true, but that isn’t always better – it’s easy to produce work in a few weeks when you are not editing content, developing marketing strategies, preselling the book to stores, arranging distribution, and when you don’t have thousands of copies of hundreds of titles to publish)
12 – sales tactics (sleazy at best) Self publishers advertise everywhere (traditonal publisher do not have to), some join writing groups pretending to be ‘just another author’

James Patterson?

I was checking out the NYT bestseller list (http://www.nytimes.com/pages/books/bestseller/index.html ) and I saw Sundays at Tiffany’s by James Patterson, and it looked like a good read. I looked him up on wikipedia, and he also wrote the Women’s Murder Club series and I was just wondering:
What do you think of James Patterson?
Would you recommend his books?
Is the Women’s Murder Club series scary, or just about murders/solving crimes?

He has actually written a ton of books, and all the ones that I have read are really good.

They are fast-paced and really suspenseful, with short chapters so they don’t bore you. I can never guess what will happen next when I read his books, which is one of the reasons why he is one of my favourite authors.

I haven’t actually read the books that you mentionned, but my friend has read the Murder Club series and she loves them. Apparently it’s just a group of women who solve murder mysteries.

His series Maximum Ride is also really good, and I have spoken to lots of people who have read it; they all really loved it.

I strongly recommend you try some of his books — you will love them!

I had “The Shirley Temple Story Book” which contained things like “Rapunzel”, “The Little Lame Prince”, “The Wild Swans”, “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow”, “The Emperor’s New Clothes”, and more. I let my sister have it when her children were small, now I have it back, read it again after many years and shared it with my grandchildren and now my great grandchildren.

I also had “The Lucky Puppy” and “The Cow In The Silo”, “Peter Pan”, “Snow White” and “Cinderella” which I also loved. For the youngest set look for the “Little Golden Books”. They’re great.

Thomas childrens books

Thomas asks…

Does reading children’s books as an adult signify a desire to escape from reality?

I love reading children’s books, and I’m 24 years old. I particularly love the Harry Potter series, the Series of Unfortunate Events, and other such fantasy tales. I’ve been told that my reading these types of books is just my way of hiding from the stark reality of the world. Is that necessarily a bad thing? Am I really too old?

Support childrens books

admin answers:

I agree with all the above – one is never too old to enjoy flights of fantasy and the delights of imagination. So what if it’s escapist? There are plenty of depressing books glorifying the negative reality of life. I can think of worse books – those with scatological and pornographic content of the nastiest kind, for a start, and all those littered with expletives.

Anyway, who writes children’s books? Children? Think of scholarly men like Tolkien and C S Lewis; and think also of the research involved in some books, like Lloyd Alexander’s “Chronicles of Prydein”, etc.

However, I also agree with the person who advises widening one’s literary horizons!

Eckhart tolle teachings(ignorant people stay out?

1)it is about thinking.i find that i may be able to quiet my mind a while.but i NEED to think.i am not referring to the mindless chatter but for example , when i am doing simple action like eating walking moving ,i need to think things like “move my hand here”.
is meditation to quite the mind during the process .if so , when i watch my thoughts i can “see” things clearer but the thought “i am watching my thoughts” always came to my mind”or the thought of “i am aware”or is that awareness
2)it is about the ego.when someone does bad things to me , i am upset or is the pain body but is all negative emotions the pain body.i do not like “hostile beings” although i know i am still whole and is not diminished.
when people harm me they may be attacking this “mental concept” or is the pain body but they are still harming this “life” the piece of a whole conscious.which is me.the me i am saying is not the mental concept but the awareness part of the whole.
3)case study.earlier this day , we argue that whether it is fine for someone to leave his assets to non-family members.i think since the assets is not me i am not “weakened” in any way so can leave it to a friend if the children do not mind.why must the assets leave it to the children and even if the child hate to do the business.their business is not part of them.i think my mother is identify the achievements as part of the person and “over important” it.is the ego or is it that i am wrong.
4)another case study.currently there is much prejudice against men and unfairness regarding expectations , divorce ,custody ,pregnancy ,responsibility.since i am not the identity ‘men” the role is ego.what you you people think in terms of evolving human consciousness.whenever i thought about this subject and how society doesn’t recognise the unfairness always triggered a dense pain body in me
5)i know we should not let mind control us but is mind “bad”.some say law of attraction coaches say that mind is the best gift and the world is mental.or is eckhart tolle just trying to quite the mindless chatter instead of the whole mind.is every thinking emotion the egopain bodynbody?

admin answers:

Tolle makes his best points in the newer book, A New Earth.
I don’t really like his references to the “pain body” as I think it distracts a person from his message.
Tolle is basically describing Buddhist “mindfulness” and walking meditation. You should go from here to reading about Buddhism’s meditation practices.
It’s all very good practice in concentration and control of the “jumping mind.” Hindus also use the same principles.

Are the Gideon Christians getting ripped off?

Think about this before you answer. Gideons international places free Bibles into motel and hotel rooms all over the world. Most Gideon members are rich retired couples. According to a poll, less than 3% of people that stay in them rooms crack open the Bible there. The Gideons pay for them Bibles through their memberships.

So since nobody reads them Bibles, the publishers are having a field day selling them Bibles to an Internatioanal business. Is this making sense to you? In other words, if you write a best selling book and sell them to old people, then why do the old peole buy them books and give them out to people that don’t read them. So is anybody getting ripped off here?
A business is a business and I’m not going to sell a screenplay that has about a 3% chance of making it into production, knowing that most of them don’t make it there in the first place. This is why when a writer sells a script, they only get about 10% of the sale until it goes into production and then they get the other 90%.

So, why should my parents buy in (and don’t tell me that the Gideon missionaries don’t buy in to the publishing company) and my parents travel internationally to do good deeds with a book that does not produce a damn thing more than 3%. Does that make sense?

The Bible is the #1 best selling book in China today, so do you think any of them millions of people at the Olympics will give a damn about reading the bible? Gideon International is a major rip off organization using “Jesus” as a front!

Support best selling book bible

Not only the biggest seller it is also the biggest giveaway. There are organizations that have the Bible printed with their logo on it and put it in motels, etc. There have been bibles sent to deprived countries and peoples for a long time. I would say that there is profit in it somewhere, but probably not to the extent that it might appear. It is expensive for leather bindery and Gold leaf pages. When you throw in the ink and the distribution, it starts to add up. I am sure that you can go to just about any true Bible believing body of believers and they will give you a free Bible if you can not afford to pay for one. If it is just the price that is bothering you, then shop around and you will find them much cheaper.

Bestselling author…?

I don’t mean to sound cynical if I do but I saw a book that had “bestselling author” on the cover only to find out this person appears on no bestseller list. He isn’t even a bestseller in his own genre. So what qualifies an author as a bestseller?
I looked up lists that contained only authors John Scalzi does not appear on any of them.

Support bestseller list

admin answers:

Good question. I don’t believe there is an official definition of the term “bestseller”. Even if there was, marketing people would still try to twist it or interpret it creatively, or use terms very similar to it, to make it look as though the book had sold more than it had.

Probably all you need is to be number 1 for a week on some chart somewhere. (Or you might only need to appear on the chart, even for one week at the bottom position. That’s the official definition of a hit song where I live.) Who compiles those charts, and what’s eligible to appear on them, is anybody’s guess. If it said something more specific like “New York Times Bestseller,” that would be false advertising and possibly trademark infringement, if the book hadn’t appeared on that newspaper’s chart.

Who else is with me on this?

I woke up this morning, and found and interesting g4 review of Eragon for 360. That dumb woman. If she can even be called that. She started out her review by spewing anti-homeschooling propaganda, something about how homeschoolers are dumb and end up getting married at 15 and working at a gas station for the rest of their miserable lives. Then she went on a rampage about Chris Paolini and how he was the symbol of homeschoolers, their greatest success story. Which, she then said, was also their greatest failure, thereby meaning the homeschoolers are dumb, misguided robots who spew their parent’s religious beliefs. NOT TRUE. That woman ought to be sued for criminal misrepresentation. She wouldn’t know a homeschooler if one smacked her upside the head. Which I very much desire to so do. Chris Paolini was on top of the NYTimes bestseller list for weeks, meaning that his books were obviously some success. Chris Paolini is NOT the symbol of homeschooling. g4 is going down, sooner or later.

I think that if more people read it (and understood and embraced it), the world would be a better place.

Making things better in the world starts with the individual. This book shows how to make yourself “better.”

The one thing I did not like was that the book ended! After my first reading, I thought, “I wish there was more about how to ‘do’ it. How to be more present,” but after simply practicing bringing myself to the present moment, I realize the simplicity of it.

His teachings are not for everyone, or they may just not be for a specific person at this time in their lives. (I’ve read, or not read, a few books like these.) I’m glad that I came across this book at this particular time in my life (not that things were bad, but I am just always looking for more ways to connect with source, and this is working for me).

Does this passage from the bible goes against eckhart tolle views on how we should live in the present ..?

For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to seperate us from the love of God that is in Christ (Romans 8:38)
i know that tolle did not originated that phylosophy, that whole thing about living in the present actually comes from Buddhism but I said eckhart tolle because he’s actually kind of famous now

Thomas eckhart tolle

Thomas asks…

Is Eckhart Tolle and Oprah, trying to turn this country to Hinduism?

Eckhart Tolle has been known to study Hinduism and the Advaita. Much of his teachings, center around them. Oprah Winfrey, his good friend, promoted a book, A Course in Miracles” in which Helen Schulman, claims to have scribed the words of Jesus Christ. However, the book uses Christian terminology to hide from the reader, that it is really learning Hinduism, mixed with other Eastern Teaching. This deception can program the mind, to convert to Hinduism, without the reader even knowing it, because the mind is very suggestible. The mind will be more open to accepting the beliefs of Hinduism, because the mind thinks it is really learning Christianity, so there will be less resistance. There is nothing wrong with turning to Hinduism, provided there isn’t any deception involved. There is no proof, that they have an ulterior motive, to turn this country to Eastern teachings, but there is proof, that his teaching are of a Hindu nature

Eckhart goes on to teach us, that thinking is a disease. Once your mind has accepted that thinking is wrong, then he can implant ideas into your mind, without any resistance on your part. How can you reject what he teaches, if you are not allowed to think or discern. Then you will think that what he teaches you, are really your ideas, and his ideas will appear true. No matter how great his ideas and teachings are, it isn’t worth anything, if it is controlled from someone outside. If he can put good ideas in your mind, then one day, he can put bad ideas in you mind. We should be taugt to THINK and Descern and we should never follow or accept any one’s teachings or ideas, UNLESS they resonate as true within us. There is nothing wrong with learning and reading other people ideas, because that is how we learn. But when the author slips in, “Don’t think” or “thinking is a disease”, it is no longer a sharing of ideas together, but more of one person telling another person, what is TRUE, while the reader, just accepts every thing the author says. This is how the mind gets conditioned. But do please notice, that as he teaches you, that thinking is a disease, that, HE, ECHART TOLLE, is doing the thinking for you. He couldn’t even teach his teachings, without thinking. Many Eastern Teachers, tells us not to think, otherwise, it would be impossible to program your mind, the way THEY THINK is best.
what do you THINK?
Thanks night bird, but Christianity teaches us to BEWARE of false prophets. Its not all based on faith, but skepticism too.

admin answers:

Pretty obvious that you have never cracked the cover of the course in miracles or you would know that what you are saying about it is nonsense.

Eastern Philosophy and the true teachings of Jesus have a great deal in common.

Notice that I said the teachings of Jesus and did not say christianity which is a mix of Paul’s nonsense theology which is the polar opposite of everything that Jesus taught and stood for.

Talk about a deception.

what are the best books to take on holiday? I need at least six, recent bestsellers…. Any suggestions?

Support bestsellers

admin answers:

Well, on holiday, one would assume you wouldn’t want some heavy tome that would require all of your attention to read…you would want something light that could be put down on a table somewhere when you want to go out.

I could recommend any mystery by John Lescroart, Jonathan Kellerman, James Patterson. The Da Vinci code is WONDERFUL but you will have a hard time putting it down.

“Undaunted Courage” is another good read, by Stephen E Ambrose. It is the story of Thomas Jefferson and Meriweather Lewis and the opening of the American west…fascinating. I guess if you are not from America, you might not be quite as thrilled but it is a good story, well written.

Any good bestsellers for an ESL student?

I am from Belgium and live now in the US , I enrolled an ESL class in order to improve my English. I would say that I can speak English fluently but I never really studied English which is why I am following that ESL class. My teacher told me that I should read in order to improve my vocabulary and grammar and when I asked him the choice of books that he recommends me , his answer was : any book that interest you, thrillers , romance , bestsellers. Do you guys think that Koontz or King books won’t be too difficult for me judging from my English level? Thanks for your time.

Support bestsellers

admin answers:

This is always a difficult question for learners of a foreign language. It’s difficult to judge your level of English just from what you’ve written here. If you are interested in reading Koontz and King books, you should try it.

Here is my strategy for reading in a foreign language:
Every word I see that I don’t know, I write down, but I keep reading. Don’t stop to look it up no matter what; ALWAYS look it up after you’re done reading.
If there is an unknown word in every sentence, then perhaps the book is too advanced. The ideal level to read at as a student is no more than 3-5 unknown words per page. That way, you can be introduced to new vocabulary, but you will be able to understand enough to make it interesting.

If Koontz or King are too difficult, you can try Harry Potter. It also might be useful to read the English version of books you’ve already read in your native language, although it might be boring, you are already familiar with the plot so you don’t need to worry about missing anything. If you find Harry Potter too difficult, go to the bookstore and ask them to show you “chapter books” and pick out anything that looks interesting.

What constitutes a bestseller? What criteria should be used to determine what is a bestseller?

Well, a bestseller is just what the word says…a BEST SELLER. It’s determined by how much it’s sold.

There are other ways that they can label books based on merit, such as “Top Critics Choice”, or something like that.

A “bestseller” is something (most of the time a book) that is bought by many people. A specific item of a magazine (for instance with a news breaking article in it) might be a “bestseller” too, if it is sold till out of stock. But then again, magazines and newspapers are printed in a certain amount, where books will be reprinted many times, if need be.

And just as it’s our responsibility to ensure that America’s young voters know the straight facts about Obama, so too with the American public.
That’s why we’re sending “The Truth about Obama” to major media outlets across the country. Because we simply cannot let the Big Media from New York, Washington, Los Angeles and other large cities continue to have their way, covering up the truth about Obama, the man who repeatedly promises “change” but will give us the same old liberal policies that have failed for 40+ years.
As our loyal friend, you know that HUMAN EVENTS has been the stalwart defender of conservative principles and traditional values since 1944 — longer than any other newsweekly.
Help us spread the conservative message even further by making it possible for us to deliver the report to every college campus and every media outlet in America as soon as possible.
Your contribution to this campaign will allow us to deliver boxes of “The Truth about Obama” to conservative student leaders on college campuses and to the opinion leaders at major media outlets. Just imagine the impact if we could afford to deliver one box to every campus and media outlet in America!
To express our gratitude for your donation of just $50 or more, we’ll send you a complimentary copy of David Fredosso’s brand-new New York Times bestseller, The Case Against Barack Obama: The Unlikely Rise and Unexamined Agenda of the Media’s Favorite Candidate. Of course, we’ll send you a copy of our special report, “The Truth about Obama: What Every Citizen Needs to Know”, to thank you for your contribution big or small. Any amount will be appreciated and will help “The Truth about Obama” reach more fact-hungry Americans.
These are critical times for our country. We must not allow the Big Media and liberal college campuses to succeed in placing one of the most liberal and inexperienced candidates ever in the White House.

“Oprah and Friends” to teach course on New Age Christ

Jesus Christ being reinvented, redefined, and blasphemed and,
this false New- Age Christ teaching is about to make huge inroads into the world, with the help of t he queen of television talk shows, Oprah Winfrey.

Oprah Winfrey, began January 1, 2008, on her daily radio
program will offer a year-long course on the New Age Christ , in a
lesson a day and completely cover the 365 lessons from the Course in
Miracles “Workbook.”

Listeners were encouraged to buy A Course in Miracles for
the year-long course, and an audio version, recited by Richard (John BoyWalton) Thomas will be available on compact disc.

Those who finish the Course will have a wholly redefined
spiritual mindset-a New Age worldview that include the beliefs that
there is no sin, no evil, no devil. A Course in Miracles teaches its
students to rethink everything they believe about God and life, and,
bluntly states: “This is a course in mind training” and is dedicated to
“thought reversal.”

The Course in Miracles -in reality-is the truth of the Bible
turned upside down.

Oprah told her television audience that Williamson’s book, A
Course in Miracles was one of her favorite books, and that she had
already bought a thousand copies and would be handing them out to
everyone in her studio audience. Oprah’s endorsement skyrocketed
Williamson’s book to the top of the New York Times bestseller list .

A Course in Miracles is allegedly a “new revelation” from
“Jesus” to help humanity work through these troubled times. This
“Jesus”-who bears no doctrinal resemblance to the Bible’s Jesus
Christ-began delivering channeled teachings in 1965 to a Columbia
University Professor of Medical Psychology, Helen Schucman.

One day Schucman heard an “inner voice” stating, “This is a
course in miracles. Please take notes.” For seven years she diligently
took spiritual dictation from this voice that described himself as
“Jesus.”

Here are some quotes from the “Jesus” voice of A Course in Miracles :

. “There is no sin . . . ”

. A “slain Christ has no meaning.”

. “The journey to the cross should be the last ‘
useless journey.”

. “Do not make the pathetic error of ‘clinging to the
old rugged cross.’”

. “The Name of Jesus Christ as such is but a symbol…
It is a symbol that is safely used as a replacement for the many names
of all the gods to which you pray.”

. “The recognition of God is the recognition of yourself.”

. “The Atonement is the final lesson he [man] need
learn, for it teaches him that, never having sinned, he has no need of
salvation.”

Popular author Wayne Dyer told his PBS television audience that
the “brilliant writing” of A Course in Miracles would produce more
peace in the world.

The Course in Miracles-based book, Forgiveness, continues to be
sold in Robert Schuller’s Crystal Cathedral bookstore as Schuller
prepares to host a January 17-19, 2008, “Rethink Conference” at his
Crystal Cathedral.
